Pro-Active Parenting

As a parent we have 2 choices.  We can be pro-active or we can be reactive.  And while being proactive takes a little bit more work up front, I find that being one step ahead of the girls is much better than being one step behind and running to catch up.

Quite frequently I hear from friends and acquaintances (even our daycare providers) that my kids are exceptionally well behaved.  And its true.  They do behave like little angels when out and about, but what about when they get home at the end of the night after behaving at school all day?  When Mommy is tired from a full day at work?  Well that’s when the shenanigans start.  Thankfully I’ve found ProActive Parenting!

Here’s an interesting article from their website that I’ve found super helpful, and hopefully so will you!

End of the Day Whining: Two tips to help

The adult world can leave you exhausted at the end of the day. All you want to do is decompress; yet your child wants 100% of your attention, and the evening arguing begins.

Mom needs to get dinner ready or bedtime will be late and dad needs to send one more email before work tomorrow. Your child doesn’t care about that, she doesn’t know anything about the adult world, she lives in the present moment and wants your attention now. And now the whining and yelling begins.

Most children can be whiney at the end of day. They’ve held it together emotionally all day without you and now they’re home where it’s safe and the emotions begin to roll. However parents have been in the adult world all day and have little energy left for any whining.

Here are two tips, one feeds attention and one feeds the tummy, both help change End of the Day Whining.

• Literally feed end of the day whining—don’t starve it.
What if you began by feeding your child ahead of dinner instead of insisting she stop whining now! We all know mealtime can be the only focused time a family has all day, and I’m not asking you to give that up, I’m suggesting a change in how it goes. Sometimes hunger causes whining and food is the only solution.

• Be proactive create a “dinner box”.
Have a container waiting in the refrigerator so she can have food as soon as she gets home. Stock the box ahead of time with things like cheese, yogurt, lunch meat, tuna, veggies and dip, fruit, cheese and crackers, cheese tortillas, or leftovers. What ever works for your child, as long as it’s healthy.

• Won’t that spoil her dinner?
No, it becomes the bulk of her dinner. It’s simply feeding her the way you used too when she was a baby, before you eat. Now she’s older and can handle eating as she does the next tip and while you continue to make the family meal. Also, your child’s stomach is the size of her fist. Toddlers and preschoolers don’t eat as much as adults do, and most don’t enjoy complex adult food; they’re natural grazers and prefer small portions many times a day of the foods already mentioned.

• What about family time?
Eating together each night is very important, but it’s not the eating of the food that’s so important, it’s the time spent together. Now that your child has been partially fed invite her to finish dinner with the family or have her join you for desert. This way you get to have a calmer family meal with less whining.

• Feed the need for attention—but on your terms.
This tip will fill both of your needs, she gets attention and you continue making dinner. Consider having a special seat in the kitchen called “time with me seat”? That way your child can be with you—but not under foot. Have your child sit in her “special” seat as she eats from the “dinner box” and let her eat slowly as she tells you about her day. Begin by asking her direct questions to get things started and then let her go on about anything. This exchange fills her up with the attention she’s craving and doesn’t force you stop the flow of family life as you provide one‐on‐one time.

toddler and preschooler behaviour.

I absolutely love the advise that Sharon provides to parents on common behavioural issues. I also love the fact that she strives to show us the point of view that our children are coming from.  Sometimes its hard to remember that our little ones think like little ones, not an adult like we do.

DAYtwenty – 150 Days of Photos

Welcome to day twenty!

001 Tala’s thirst for knowledge brought us to the computer today to learn about the solar system.  Coolest find?  The earth rising and setting on the moon!

See you tomorrow for DAYtwenty-one!

Quite Possibly the Neatest Thing Ever!

During my strive to satisfy my 4 year olds craving for knowledge today (today’s topic of interest the Solar System) we came across this video on YouTube.

Seeing the earth rise and set over the moon is so awesome!

Enjoy!

DAYseventeen – 365 Days of photos

Its a bird, its a plane… no its an Inuksuk!

011 Like our miniature Inuksuk?  Today is Aboriginal Day and the girls and I headed to the Civic Centre for the Celebrations this afternoon.  The girls each picked up a little Inuksuk Puzzle that we put together.  I couldn’t resist taking a picture!

Traditionally constructed out of stones to show weary hunters and travellers the way home, to mark places of significance, to caution danger, and also to assist with herding of Cariboo for hunting purposes the Inuksuk now stands for hope and unity.

Happy Aboriginal Day!

DAYfourteen – 365 Days of Photos

Back on track… I promise… oopsies!

002The Grand-daughter of all Grand-Father’s Day Pressies!  Miss Tala was busy at work creating this masterpiece for her Grandpaw’s present this weekend.  She got the idea that she was going to make him a picture of a deer… I suggested she take a page out of Mister Maker’s Book and create a picture with beads.  This was the result, she cannot wait to show Grandpaw!

See you tomorrow for DAYfifteen!

Seafest 2009

My first year at a new job and I decided to make a splash in the company, and also within the community. So I launched a huge project to participate in the 2009 Seafest Parade. After a couple months of non-commitment from my coworkers everyone finally jumped on the band wagon in the last week. I had plans to put forth a float regardless of how many people actively participated, albeit it would have been on a much much smaller scale than what we did create. A huge thank you to my wonderful coworkers who truly came together to make an amazing float that was fun for everyone, especially our work children who rode in the back of the float.

balloons

What Happens when you have a float decorating potluck supper at your home the night before Seafest and end up storing the balloons for the night… lol.

Seafest 2009 had an interesting theme, that was actually quite hard to come up with an original float idea for.

A Whale of a Good Time.

The obvious choice was a whale. However, how to stand out in a sea of Whales? Pinocchio? Moby Dick? Killer Whales?

When I heard that we would have use of a trailer my immediate thought was to create a bathtub, and with team input we decided on transforming the trailer into a beluga shaped bath tub, full of balloon bubbles, and give out bubbles to the kids in the audience. Things with the trailer didn’t pan out, but thankfully our manager has a pick up truck and we transformed that into a bathtub… complete with an amazing wonderful Paper-Mache' Grey Whale courtesy of the guys at work. It was absolutely amazing, and was set up to look like the Whale was having “A Splashing Good Time” in the tub. Surrounded by balloon bubbles and our children it was awesome. We also added a bubble blower to the float to add to the whole bathtub theme. As an added plus the staff showed up in their pj’s & robes just like they were getting ready for a bath.

036 Great fun for everyone involved. We got amazing feedback and are already planning for next years parade! Our organization definitely has the parade fever. 041

Dancing Queen

I know, I know, another post featuring my little dancing girl.  Yesterday was Tala’s first rehearsal on the big stage for her dance recital this weekend.  The class as a whole was a tad disorganized the first time through, Tala got a huge laugh when she stood in the middle of the stage and pulled her skirt up to her neck, and then back down, and up again, and then down again.  Thankfully the second time through went a whole lot more fluidly.  The little ones got the biggest round of applause out of all the acts that we saw…. mostly from the older dancers, as I’m sure most of us parents were a tad weepy.

As I’m on vacation through the end of this weekend, we decided to do a run through on makeup this morning, along with a set of photos.  Putting makeup on a 4 year old tough, but I think we did pretty good.  And of course Miss Malie had to get in on the action as well.dancemakeupThe girls are doing a Teddy Bear routine where they are heading off to bed, hence the wardrobe of a housecoat.019

005Aside from the running around to get her to her rehearsals in time, and the daunting task of doing her makeup, the hardest part of the process is taming her wild mane into a dancers bun.  Thankfully after years and years of dancing myself I know that the trick is hairnets.  All in all not too shabby for a first time through!  Tala’s hair is pretty short, and without the use of a hairnet this bun never would have happened.  The store had only white or black, and I figured the white would be a better match for her blonde curls.044 Curious about Miss Malie’s Makeover?  Since her sister was getting her makeup done, and having her picture taken in costume Miss Malie absolutely had to follow suit.

035 Of course Malie took this opportunity to let her personality shine (she'’ll be a class clown I’m sure!)

…and shine…033…and then shine some more…

023 Very Mickey and the Sorcerer’s Hat, don’t you think?

…and then finally success getting a zinger of a great picture…

Loving my Airmiles

This morning I headed into Safeway to take advantage of a couple totally awesome Airmiles earning options, especially so when combined with super awesome coupons!

Bought: 2x Purex Toilet Paper (on sale for $5.99) less $1 off coupon (only had one.. sure wish I’d had more!)…. total cost $10.98, received 40 bonus airmiles. Airmile to dollar ratio: $0.27. 22c a roll for toilet paper while not an absolutely amazing deal, is pretty decent, and the airmiles sweeten the deal [on a side note - yes I do have a scale that I adhere to when purchasing toilet paper – lol – ranging from buy the bare minimum to Start to Car! (ala the Ikea commercials)]

Bought 5x Kellogg’s Rice Krispies @ 2.50 each minus 2x $2 off coupons (kicking myself for not having more of these - lol)…. total cost $8.50, received 60 bonus airmiles. Airmile to dollar ratio: $0.14 <---- amazing deal!

If I get motivated this week I might swing by and pick up the Eggo Waffles on for $2 each. Less $1 off coupon. So 6 x $2=12-6 (in coupons)=$6, and 60 airmiles. Airmile to dollar ratio: $0.10 <----- which is the best I’ve ever seen!

All in all an awesome day shopping. Saved $5 in coupons, and got 100 airmiles for $20.92 after taxes (airmiles to dollar ratio: $0.21).

So what do I do with all those airmiles anyway?

A lot of people out there feel that redeeming valuable Airmiles for gift cards is a waste of hard earned miles. And while it is definitely clearly getting more bang for your mile when redeeming for free flights, for a single parent with 2 little girls the massive amount of airmiles I’d need to fly us anywhere is astronomical. So I redeem for giftcards.

The card du jour is Chapters.ca. 365 airmiles gets you a $50 giftcard. I have 2 saved up, plus a $5 giftcard from a survey I did. In addition to the $104 currently saved up I also redeemed for a $50 giftcard for Malie’s birthday presents in May. Hooray!

So I currently have $105 in Chapters giftcards, with my eyes on 2 big ticket items for the girls, and then quite a few smaller items for stocking stuffers on *my* wishlist as well. Hoping for at least one more $25 giftcard, or ideally a $50 to make a truly special Christmas morning for the girls.

I also have $35 in amazon.ca giftcards saved up through Swagbucks.com which will go towards books for the girls as I always try to fill out their stockings with reading materials.

Speciality Collectables Review & Giveaway

I have to confess that while I am in my late 20’s (*sob*) there is still a special place in my heart for childhood favourites like Rainbow Brite, Jem and Shera. I’m sure that I have the same sentiment for these shows that my children will bring forward for Cody Maverick (Surf’s Up) and Dora the Explorer.

Adding small touches of my favourites to my day to day wardrobe is a fun way to spruce up my wardrobe. So when I came across Angela’s shop Speciality Collectables I was ecstatic! Not only do her items fill my need for memorabilia of my childhood, they’re super high quality, and very reasonably priced to boot! The image is firmly attached to the backing, and is not simply a sticker glued on. These products are designed to last in a world that seems to have turned disposable.

One other thing that I love about Speciality Collectables is that they can also turn your images into custom products. Have a favourite picture that you’d love to give someone? Sent it along in email and they’ll make it work for you.

Gods Behaving Badly

Gods Behaving Badly took me a little while to get into, but once I got right into the story the book was impossible to put down.  Now to be perfectly honest, Gods Behaving Badly is the book I picked up to get over my Twilight obsession.  And while I had wonderful intentions of getting thoroughly into this book I just couldn’t shake Twilight.  I’m pretty sure if Forks wasn’t stuck in my mind I would have been able to jump into Gods Behaving Badly so much faster.

godsbehavingbadlyNow, the storyline behind this book is absolutely enthralling to me as someone who fell in love with Greek Mythology as a teenager.  As the title of the book hints at this book follows a group of Greek Gods  in their misadventures.  For someone who considers herself somewhat of a Mythology Buff it was absolutely enchanting to see the author Marie Phillips’ adaption of their age old traits into the modern era.

Phillips’ book has succeeded in rebirthing the gods into the 21st Century.  Not only are the Gods rebirthed, they lead us on quite the adventure.  Through failed television programs, mediocre careers, mis-guided love, and the sort of boredom that comes with centuries of life you get a unique, madly entertaining view into the individual characteristics that make the Greek Gods who they are.

Without giving too much of the ending away I must say that I love the way Marie Phillips decided to finish off her story.  While the story pertains to the Gods, it can also reflect on us mortals too.  Being believed in is a powerful entity, and can empower us to accomplish so much more then we ever perceived possible.

I also love the thought that we could be living beside Gods.  It brings Joan Osbourne’s Song to the forefront of my mind.  I have always been captivated by her question “What if god was one of us?”.

I recommend picking this book up for the entertainment value.  Odds are you won’t bring anything else away from the reading of this book more than being highly entertained.  But that’s not such a bad thing either.

Happy Reading!
